Honored Council members: I have acquired Leonardo's manuscript, by your request. It contains many plans and diagrams, some of which look like weapons, and others which are strange and difficult for a layman such as I to understand. Many seem to comment upon waterworks, pumps, locks, and the like. There are many rumors in the countryside, wherever Leonardo has passed. The rabble murmurs that Leonardo's death will be soon, because of the ghost which follows him.
I am sending this note on by horseman, because I will wait here several days before returning to Venice with the manuscript. Opportunities may spring up here at any moment; the soil of this place seems fertile for intrigue and rumor. It is somewhat ironic, the honored council may find, that I am quartered near a lock designed by Leonardo himself, some years ago. Your (/servant?)&c. Biagio da Cesena
