0: KANDAHAR, Afghanistan

Greetings, Soldier... As you may have heard, the U.S.S. Cole was struck by a suicide bomber while refueling in Yemen. We believe a terrorist group know as al-Qaeda is behind the attack. The group is lead by Osama bin Laden, a terrorist we believe to also be behind the earlier bombings of U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Though we have more than enough evidence to convict bin Laden in both cases, his current whereabouts is unknown. We also believe Afghanistan's Taliban regime is harboring bin Laden somewhere near your current location in Kandahar.

If you are reading this, I can assume you've figured out how to hard-wire your laptop into the local phone system. Though technology in the region is somewhat primitive by American standards, the telephone network is more than sufficient for transmitting encoded data to you on a need-to-know basis. Be sure to refresh your mission files by downloading new updates, just as you are now, as frequently as possible, whenever a phone line is accessible. Technology is really turning into our biggest ally in this war.

That reminds me... Keep an eye open for switches and checkpoints. Switches are used to open doors, turn on lights and even reroute water supplies. Often they can be triggered manually or, in some cases, activated by a long-range projectile such as a grenade or missle. Checkpoints are used by Taliban officals to monitor the whereabouts of their troops. But for you, with some minor rewiring, checkpoints can be used to back-up your personal data files. This way, in the unfortunate event you're killed in action, we'll have full account of everything that happened up to the most recent point at which your files were saved.

Furthermore, for the past few days, American cargo planes have been air-dropping food rations throughout the region. Be sure to keep your strength up by staying well-nourished. Primarily the food rations are there for the starving civilian population of Afghanistan, but with as many food drops as we've flown over the area, you're more than welcome to take advantage of the essential nutrients they provide.

Your mission is to infiltrate a nearby terrorist camp known as Camp Darunta, believed to have been the training grounds for the suicide bomber responsible for attempting to sink the Cole. The path leading away from the airport should take you to the outskirts of Kandahar where the camp is stationed. Because current public opinion prohibits the U.S. from declaring an all-out war on countries harboring terrorists, our only option is a covert operation... ...and that's where you come in.

Destroy as much in the camp as possible, especially any electronic equipment you come across. Information is the lifeblood of these groups. Take that away, and they lose their greatest asset. And be on the lookout for suicide bombers. They have no regard for human life whatsoever and should be taken down on sight. At the same time, do your best to minimalize civilian casualties by sparing women and children. The last thing we need is for the press to scream bloody murder in the name of the Taliban, the regions primary government. Unfortunately, the world is unaware of what atrocities these groups are capable of.

If you find bin Laden, take him alive. We'll need him for questioning. Regardless, stay focused on the task at hand. Remember your primary objective is to disarm that camp and incapacitate it's ability to produce future terrorists that threaten not only the security of America, but the entire international community. Also, in the event you uncover any information that pertains to plans of future attacks, hard-wire into the first phone line you come across and upload all pertinent data immediately. Good luck, Soldier... ...and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Great job taking out the camp, Soldier! With the exception of a few civilian casualties, the mission was a complete success! Furthermore, the plans you've uncovered to destroy New York's World Trade Center and other U.S. landmarks will help us prevent what would have otherwise been a horrible tragedy. Unfortunately, the plans still aren't enough to convince the current administration to launch an all out strike against these terrorist groups or even the cells we now believe to be stationed within our own borders! What's more, bin Laden still has yet to be located at a time we feel his followers are stronger than ever.

Believe me, Soldier, I'm just as pissed-off about it as much as I can well assume you are. If it were up to me, I'd unleash the unholy hell on these animals, but I have my orders just like you do. Looks like The Pentagon will need war to come knocking on it's own front door before we'll get to take any real action... damned politics. Anyway, don't let it hamper your spirits, Soldier. You've done your part and now it's time to stand down. Remember the mission was a success, and for now, that's all that matters. Be proud. Great work, Soldier!
