11: Dalton Base

We're here! You'd better work fast once I open the rear hatch, as there's probably a group of aliens or human terrorists waiting for you outside. They couldn't have missed our arrival. According to what little intelligence I have been able to gather, there is still active fighting going on inside the complex. I suspect that there are sections that are held by aliens and other sections defended by CPS. Chances are good that both sides will be hostile to you and that you'll get caught in some nasty crossfire. If the layout of this complex is as I expect, there will be a security checkpoint you will have to pass through to access the rest of the base. I'm providing you with an uplink chip that will give me access if you insert it there. I should be able to hit the correct access code fairly quickly. As soon as you get inside, try to find a terminal and I'll contact you again. The basic idea here is that you get physical access to a small shuttle here. This shuttle was designed for a mission in which CPS planned to hijack the personal shuttle of the ambassador of the African Unity Party and fly a duplicate of that shuttle to Alpha station. The duplicate would be packed with explosives. Alpha station would, of course, be destroyed after the shuttle docked. The ID codes that were to be smuggled out of Endymion, coupled with a comparison of the physical appearance of the ship, should give us automated clearance to dock at Alpha. And I just happen to have managed to read the codes into my memory!

Could you please get your butt in gear? MOVE! I don't expect to see you back here again.

Okay, I have more details on our plan. The power outage has disabled the defensive weapon systems all throughout the complex, since they would drain the backup batteries and life support would fail. However, I don't think you'll be able to handle the critter load in the docking bay where the shuttle is located. We'll need to activate the defenses to destroy the aliens there. Fortunately, we won't be around long afterwards, so you don't have to worry about the life support issue. The control that will reactivate these systems is protected by a very complex security code, which I cannot break in a reasonable amount of time. There are two chips containing this code in the complex, one of which was in the possession of the head security officer. Unfortunately, from what I can tell from the surveillance systems, he was killed and the chip fell into the mainframe coolant pool. It will be very difficult to access.

Fortunately, there's a slightly easier solution. The master chip is located in a special lockdown chamber. This chip would be VERY dangerous to the CPS if it got out, so the security is pretty good. You'll have to activate four controls within the chamber to open the lockdown. The first can only be accessed if you open the control panel using a switch at location A on this map. Entering the chamber will be tricky. It was designed to be a two-man job. The switch at location B will open the door to the lockdown chamber, but only for about ten seconds or so -- not long enough for a person to run from the switch to the door. However, you're faster than a normal person. I believe you can make it.

Once you have the chip, you will need to insert it in a chip receptacle at location C, at the top of the tower shown here. This will open access to the base of the tower. In the base, at location D, is a switch that will activate the security systems. I should be able to ensure that the activation message is sent only to the docking bay. You may go to the docking bay observation deck and watch the slaughter if you like. Once it's over, go back and smash the circuits behind the panel at location E to shut down the defenses for good. If you have trouble opening the panel -- and you might, as I can't open it remotely -- then you'll just have to haul ass to the shuttle and try not to get said ass shot off.

If you have trouble with any of this, come back here and contact me again. Hopefully, I won't hear from you again until you're at the shuttle.

Looks like the lockdown chamber has not been properly maintained. That panel is firmly stuck -- nothing I can do will budge it. Fortunately, there's a hidden maintenance passageway in the crew living quarters that leads to the circuitry for that panel. If you smash those circuits, I should be able to get the next panel open for you. I've opened the door to this passageway, since it is usually kept locked.

Don't forget, once you have the chip, you will need to insert it in a chip receptacle at location C, at the top of the tower shown here.

EMERGENCY! We are under attack! The following contingencies are in effect: 3) Power Loss Reactivate defensive systems only in extreme emergency. Coded distress signal will be sent from remote message node requesting urgent engineering assistance at the power plant. 13) Message Node Loss The remote message node is unresponsive. Possible causes are destruction of the node or interrupt in the cabling system leading to the node.

There's a safety override in place that will not permit the bay doors to open, and I can't seem to bypass it. Apparently, once hostiles have been reported in the bay, only a code held by the bay supervisor will release the override, and I don't have that code. You'll need to smash the override circuitry. Fortunately, it's behind a panel next to you. I'll open the panel for you, so it should be easy to find. The door should pop right open when these circuits fail. Oh, by the way -- you would be wise not to smash those circuits while there are sill bugs running around in there. Wait until the security systems have dealt with all of them.

Good work. Now if you can just free up the controls to the shuttle for me... ahh, thanks! I've uploaded myself entirely to the shuttle, and I've deactivated the explosives. Shut yourself down and I'll get us to Alpha station. I'll let you in on the rest of the plan once we're there.

Well, what are you standing around for? Go get in the shuttle! By the way, sorry about those security doors closing on you. I hope it isn't an inconvenience. Some redundant circuit somewhere saw the "failure" of the bay doors and decided to shut them. On the bright side, I finally found a way to deactivate the guns in the bay by tricking the power systems into sending a huge power surge their way, so you won't have as much trouble as I'd thought.

What are you standing around for? Take the chip and insert it at location C, at the top of the tower shown here. Then go to the base of the tower and flip the switch at location D. By the way, I've discovered the panel I mentioned at location E is jammed. I hope you were good at dodge ball when you were a kid, cause you're going to need those skills now! I can't find any other way to deactivate the security systems -- not in a reasonable amount of time, anyway.
