5: Static Sand Land

Who were those guys? What was bugging me when we landed was why the Pfhor had such a presence on a planet that seems to be entirely without value. Now, there's the possibility that there is some kind of hidden weapon or mineral or something else buried under the ground for ten thousand years that the Pfhor are looking for, but when we hacked into the Pfhor computer network earlier, we found out the truth: they're fighting some guys. What a surprise. There wasn't a lot of information on what or who these enemies of theirs are, but it might be some kind of separate sect of Pfhor; some kind of rebellion, or something else.

To be quite honest, this kind of interaction -- discovering the nature of new civilizations and societies -- might be a little trite, but that is one greater objective of the Outer Reaches Expeditionary Legion, and really it's a lot more practical with the tools we've got on the Istanbul than fighting against the Pfhor Empire. Besides: we don't know where the Atreides is, and neither do the bugs. If the ship did crash on the planet, there is the chance that this other group -- whoever they are -- knows where it is. But they have some pretty advanced teleportation blocking technology; I can only use hard-coded transport destinations based out of whatever terminal you're operating from. There's one option that looks like a point of engagement between the Pfhor and... whoever they are. We'll give that a try.

Try to be nice.

Speaking in more or less total confidence to you, I am... afraid of what we're getting ourselves in to. Of all the men and women serving on this ship, showing a level of bravery and merit far above what would be expected onboard a research ship like ours, the only person I can find some attachment to is you. And in a weird way, my human cohorts and subordinates are almost as alien as the actual aliens that serve on the ship. The UESC called on me to drop what we were doing and inject myself and a crew of three hundred and eighty four -- including the security team and the S'pht'Kr -- into a war I wasn't interested in and was unfit to be a part of. And I called on you to be in the same conflict, because you're already used to such manipulation. Maybe I can get some insight.

But you don't talk much, do you? Anyway, I'm off topic. As I say, I'm afraid of what we're getting in to. It's just so frustrating... being isolated from the UESC like this. What could their aim be in not supporting us? Don't they realize how important the mission is? It's not that I don't have confidence in you, but... what can I do? What are you doing here? Go back to the other building. Didn't you walk past the other terminal in there? Get out of here and quit hanging around.
