Hello, Soldier. I am EGON, the computer aboard this vessel. We are in the Tau Ceti quadrant, about 793 light-years from Beta Liguria System. Welcome back. How are you feeling? You may be experiencing some disorientation. Your body has been in stasis at 0.09 K for 60 years, ever since your departure from the Orion Felpades Marine depot, and your cryo-pod had been in storage there for 39 years before that. And yes, that´s after the 15 years of classified UESC missions which kept you running around the Galaxy. Further information about you is security level 3: someone´s making sure your current status is kept under wraps. But I can tell you this: You are a legend. And I am bringing you back to Earth.

You are aboard the Kubrick: Standard Rescue Ship SRS-4781, property of the UESC Interstellar Navy. Our navigational trajectory has placed us within a few kilometers of the old Starship UESC Marathon, which, if you recall, was abandoned in space by the UESC Navy about a half century ago, after more than 450 years of service. In the approach, my short-range motion sensors detected unidentified activity aboard the Marathon. It may be nothing, but I have orders to investigate in any event. Any recorded activities picked up by our sensors must be confirmed or proven an anomaly. It is essential a causative factor be interpreted and assigned. UESC AI Regulation #271AKL16740157 This is the reason I have awakened you. You were there almost 200 years ago. It is time to return, your assignment awaits you.

Most data about this ship (including blueprints of it) were archived to the UESC Navy Records Storage Center long ago - there is nothing in my databanks aside from the basics of its existence. A spectral metallographic analysis of nearby structures seems to indicate that they were built over a prior bio-mineral mass. This would suggest that someone has been using the Marathon since its abandonment by the UESC. My sensors are not strong enough for a more complete analysis of the situation. It seems all of the UESC Marathon's external shuttle bays are out of service. It is essential you do some reconnaissance - if things go badly, this little vessel is our only ticket out of here. We are now in a dynamic orbit about 150 meters from the Marathon's outer hull. The Maintenance AI is working on some equipment to help you cross the vacuum between the two vessels, but you'll need to find your own entrance. Please explore the area and collect as much data as you can from the Marathon local net with your in-suit computer. Then RETURN HERE so I can process it. Peripheral Information: The UESC AyeMakSicur, an interstellar PeaceMaker ship, disappeared in this quadrant 14 months ago. It was carrying Top-Secret cargo destined for the Alpha Thaesus Conglomerate.

There´s more information available about upgrades done to your old battle suit, and a current status on your weapons stock. In order to access this data, contact Zerv, the Maintenance AI of this vessel. I know you don't need this, but Good luck.

Downloading RAM from IS-56 in-suit computer Please wait... Nicely done. The data you have collected is encrypted in an unknown language that I must decode. It seems that an entire Pfhor Batallion has installed a Hive Colony within the Marathon and has suborned the AyeMakSicur crew to conduct unknown experiments. Please go to the Stasis Chamber while I translate the valuable information that you have retrieved. It may take a few earth rotations (your 24/hour days). Zerv has some new information available about your current weapons status.

My name is Zerv, and I am the Kubrick Maintenance AI. I know you are going to investigate a potentially dangerous place... Unfortunately, you are not aboard a combat ship, and we have no modern weapons available onboard. We do have a light arsenal in the secondary unit pod that arrived with you. We have very little ammunition, however, and some of that is unstable due to its age.

Current Weapons Status The bad news first: The bullets and grenades for the MA-75B Assault Rifle are useless. There are no missiles for the SPNKR-XP SSM Missile Launcher. I have used the only two napalm tanks and some parts of the ignition mechanism of the TOZT-7 Backpack Napalm Unit for another device, so it is out of service. We have a large stockpile of batteries for the Zeus-Class Fusion Pistol, but their power is considerably reduced due to their age. The good news: Your trustworthy .44 Magnum Mega Class A1 Pistols are A-OK, ammunition included (in the depot). The WSTE-M Combat Shotgun and the KKV-7 10mm SMG Flechette are both operational and I am in the process of reconditioning the ammo. (They will be ready soon.)

While you investigate the hulk nearby, I will try to solve a technical problem: I have an old MOW-MDN/36CM Assault Rifle in the depot (similar to the one you used in your mission at Mi'Karr against the Evil forces), but the firing mechanism is completely nonfunctional. I will attempt to patch it with pieces from your MA-75B Assault Rifle to make a useful weapon in case heavier weapons become necessary. The MOW-MDN/36CM firing speed is lower but the power of the bullets and grenades are almost twice that of the MA-75B. (If you need to use it, be very frugal with the ammunition - it's all we have.) One advantage: the MOW-MDN/36CM ammunition doesn't need as much oxygen and therefore can fire fairly well in a vacuum.

Second problem: your current combat suit. I have tested your suit carefully and it operates almost perfectly, including the primitive IS-56 in-suit computer. The motion sensor and the automap, however, are damaged - they still function, but you will experience glitches. As you already know, we have not docked at the Marathon because of UESC Regulations. You must manuever across/through the space between the Kubrick and the Marathon. To help you with this, I have attached a Pfhor personal mobility device to your backpack, a unit I discovered damaged but repairable in the depot. I have recycled or modified the parts that I could work with. The device was obtained during the last of the Lh'owon battles. Technical details: This is a one-man jetpack with a small retropropulsion rocket which I have modified to use napalm as a fuel. (In building this, I used the only two remaining napalm tanks and some parts of the ignition mechanism of the TOZT-7 Backpack Napalm Unit.) Because the napalm is not the original fuel and you are much heavier than a normal Pfhor Fighter, this device will allow you to fly only in places with very low or no gravity.

I have also installed a small hypersonic radar chip in this jetpack (though it has an audible signal, as well). It has been adapted from an old biobus chip. This will keep you "wired" to default points of the ship's outer structure when you are exploring the hull in space. Because the output power level of the radar is very low, I have programmed your in-suit IS-56 computer to automatically manage the Pfhor device. This programming will limit your movement to a safe radius around the two ships, and keep you from floating off into space. Due to the rudimentary 4 bit addressing bus of your in-suit IS-56 computer, I could not install an additional command to fly. It is similar to the run or swim motions you are used to. You should try to get the hang of it quickly, as air is at a premium during this stage of your jouney. Bear in mind, concentration is essential.

Nevertheless, you have enough leeway to cause you oxygen shortage problems if you're not careful. Three more things: 1. It seems there are two locations which might provide entrance to the UESC Marathon: A maintenance door adjacent to some kind of observation deck, and a small, obsolete, external teleporter near an abandoned hangar bay. I hope that at least one of these entry points is still in service.

2. Once you enter the Marathon, I will try to follow the weak signal of your hypersonic radar chip and teleport a TTD (Teleportable Terminal Device) to a common area so that you can communicate with Egon while you are aboard the ship. Due to the low subspatial frequency and short bandwith of this device, while it can penetrate the steel of the hull, it can only receive text. 3. Unfortunately, the teleporter aboard the Kubrick is currently out of service. I'm working on it, and hope to have it online soon. For the time being, you're on your own.

Hello again. Your shotgun, and the ammunition for it, is waiting for you in the depot nearby (if you have not found them already). The patched hybrid Assault Rifle will be in service soon. Go see Egon, near the Stasis chamber, to download the information in your suit recorder.

INCOMING MESSAGE FROM EGON Your mission IS STILL INCOMPLETE Information collected so far suggests that there are still data terminals to access in this area. Warning: I am detecting traces from old biobus chips. These could be damaged due to their age - you are advised to avoid them.

The others are asleep; I'm the only one awake as I write this. This observation deck we're hiding in is isolated, almost abandoned, but we could be found at any minute. Maybe we're the last, we've lost contact with other survivors. No matter. We'll fight with what we have until the end. There are rumors that if they catch us alive they'll use us in horrible experiments I'd rather not think about. I'm leaving this message in case someday, someone manages to recapture the UESC Marathon, so they know we were here, in this cold and solitary night, far, far away from home, fighting until the end even though the fear is already rooted in our bones, fighting until the end because we have no other choice... I would have liked to have children. I would have liked to see Janet again, I would have liked so many things... I hope someday someone will read this.

It's 3 AM. All is quiet for the moment. The universe through these enormous windows appears more beautiful, but colder... It would seem that in the last moments you love life more than ever. When our grandfathers left Mars so many years ago they never could have imagined that it would all end like this.

It's 3:30... the time passes so slowly. Those who survived the first Pfhor attack didn't think there would be another - they thought we would be safe. We're not safe; we're hidden in this isolated observation deck, waiting for the end. The universe always looks so beautiful through these great windows...

Hello again. Your shotgun, and the ammunition for it, is waiting for you in the depot nearby (if you have not found them already). The patched hybrid Assault Rifle will be in service soon. It seems you will need them...
