9: Great Cave Offensive

The S'pht'Kr tell me that the Renegades are able to bulk up their army with "biological synthesis" -- in other words, cloning. Not brainwashing, like I had hoped. This would explain the many Pfhor soldiers that fight along their side. They hijack data saved into the many pattern buffers they have around their garrisons, and manipulate it with their machines. The S'pht'Kr aren't too clear on how it works -- obviously, otherwise they'd be using it too. The long and short of it is that the Renegades can essentially endlessly reinforce themselves with their machines. I have no idea where their biological synthesizers are, so we can't strike them at the source, either.

We can, however, do something better. According to the scant information the S'pht'Kr have been able to find, the Renegade biosynth process requires a large quantity of some naturally-occuring mineral that can be extracted from these subterranean caverns underneath the planet's surface. The process is difficult and requires some spectacularly advanced mining facilities to pull the mineral from the lava they filter. This is one such facility, which would explain the large amount of activity we detected earlier this afternoon. This complex is a combination of a mine and a refinery for the ore they extract.

No doubt you can see where I'm going with this. I want you to find a way to disrupt their mining functionality. It seems like that would be easier than disrupting their refinery. After all, they can build another refinery, but if this is the only mining site, they may be severely disrupted. Hopefully we can extract some of the mineral for studying later -- but we've got bigger issues than research now. You'll have to find a way into the caves. The mining is undoubtedly done automatically by some big drilling machine, which would be in the caves. You'll have to find another security card to breach the doors. Once you find the machinery, I can probably send you an update with further instructions. It can't be that complicated though, really. And one last thing. You will remember how the Renegades extract biological imprints from pattern buffers? It seems likely that they will attempt to do so with any of my soldiers that have used them. Do not hesitate to kill any "humans" firing on you. Perhaps they'll try to clone you, next.

[S'pht translator active] It has become clear to us, friend, that this Renegade sect is far more dangerous than we had originally anticipated. We are sure now that they are the A'khr, the dissidents within the 11th clan that would have brought the end times on us a thousand years ago. They appear to possess incredible strength in their synthesized armies. The artificial intelligence that commands their forces is far more cunning and devious than the slaver armies your kind has become accustomed to fighting against. It is of the utmost urgency to address this enemy. Your director Mara Harrison, however, has her doubts, which we relay to you:

The problem is that we simply have no knowledge about these Renegades whatsoever. We know nothing about the size of their forces, the location of their primary bases, or the extent of their capabilities. Their AI, Karma, makes threats of destruction, but we don't know if he can follow through on that. We don't even know the extent to which Karma operates and interacts with the Renegades as a whole aside from some general command position. You must be prepared for a full attack on the Renegades. The Pfhor Empire maintains a large presence on the planet's surface, and it appears that the two forces are in nearly constant combat with one another. Thus, we can attack while the bulk of their army is tangled with the slavers and get much further. I have scanned the planet's surface again, and it seems that the Renegades maintain a large and heavily-defended fortress in the northern regions of this continent. It doesn't appear to be their command center, however; the standing presence there is not large enough. It must be protecting something else.

Your friend is preparing a large-scale assault. You ought to go with her. The teleporters are primed and ready for your departure.

What is your stake in this, anyway? Don't you understand what you're getting into... human? This is not an issue with which you ought to trifle yourself. The A'khr are not a threat to the galaxy in the way that the Pfhor Empire is. By wandering around here, you are moving off the plot.

If you think there is some intriguing mystery for you to uncover, you're wrong. There's no conspiracy, no secret weapon, no hidden plot for galactic destruction or anything else. We are just another society fighting the Pfhor, and we want nothing to do with you. I can only surmise you are here for the fallen ship. If you can find it, you can keep it. There is nothing left for us on it. Take it and leave. You do not want to suffer our wrath in full.

This is the big drilling machine, alright. It seems my initial summary of the complex was wrong, though -- that monstrosity in the chamber behind you both culls and filters the lava at once. It's rather impressive. There are four panels that protect fairly delicate circuitry that keeps the machine working properly. Destroy them. My guess is that the internal pumping systems require that magma to constantly move quickly; if it sits, it will probably do considerable damage. Once the drill is properly wrecked, an emergency exit from the complex in the southwest corner of the region should open itself. It's there in the event of an overflow of unfiltered lava, or something. Head there, and I can take you out.

[S'pht translator active] Notice to all drill or refinery workers: In the event of a catastrophic system failure of pumping systems, which may require a general evacuation of local staff, the door to your left will be open as an emergency exit. Please do not bar this door, or otherwise obstruct the free passage of local staff in the event of such a catastrophe.
